Fruit

The Victorian Plane Tree has clustered, burr-like fruits. They stay on the tree until spring before breaking up to disperse the hairy seeds. Plane tree fruit emerges in late May or early June (about the same time that the leaves show). They are formed in sphere shaped clusters about 3cm in diameter. The clusters develop over the season into seed balls that are brown and fuzzy. They are green at first, turning brown as the seeds complete growth.
The fruits are normally in pairs and have protruding hairs. These hairs can cause allergic reactions for some people. These balls hang on the tree, two or three to a stalk, through autumn and much of the winter before starting to shed the seeds in the spring.
