Bark

The bark of the Victorian Plane Tree scrapes off in small patches, to reveal new bark underneath. The quicker the tree grows, the more shredding of bark takes place. The bark peels off in irregularly shaped patches, producing a spiky, scaly appearance. On old trunks, bark may not flake off, but thickens and cracks instead.
The process of bark shredding is how the tree keeps itself clean which was considered important as the plane tree could suffer from a lot of pollution. In the pictures below you can see patches where the bark has fallen off the tree.
